Hey everyone I'm getting a custom 180 gallon sump made for my new 600 gallon tank system. The 160 gallon sump that originally came with the set up had a crack in it. The seller was nice enough to give me a different 160g bare tank but I decided to use the 160g as a spare grow out tank and just get a 180g sump made by my local custom tank builder. My question is should I just stick with the wet/dry trickle system design or should I try something different? The system came with 40 gallons of bioballs and a lot of ceramic media. My friends tell me to try out k1. I've heard of it but don't know much about it. Also I would like the sump to be easy on maintenance. Any other ideas and cool designs out there that anyone experienced with before I get it made? Help much appreciated. Thanks.

40g of bio balls and ceramic media is tried and true. A trickle setup will aerate the water and increase O2 in the tank. If you really want an efficient filter, utilize the trickle design and add a LifeGard Aquatics fluidized sand bed to the sump and you will never overtax the bio in that 600.

Finally some responses. Thanks guys. Anyhow is the 50l of k1 all you have for bio media? Also does it have to keep moving for it to be efficient? Also how's the maintenance on the k1?

Ya I will probably do a trickle system since I have the bio balls already. The setup I bought came with a 19" sand filter which uses 100lbs of sand. Will it work the same as the fluidized sand bed filter? Also I'm thinking maybe I'll add a chamber for the k1 media just to try it out. Or would there be no need to?

That sand filter isnt for bio and I don't think you could make it a fluidized bed.
That being said, I think you would have MORE than enough filtration with a trickle and that sand beast!

Why dont you use that sand Filter? Whats your stocking ?
Its all my bio media it supposly to manage 500g Per day of food cero maintance , the idea is that its fluidized.
Check a thread of call something with creating the ultimate filtration system.

yes I will be using the 19" sand filter along with the sump. My system came with a bunch of canisters that I'll also most likely be using. K1 sounds pretty good. I think I will try it out. The stock I want will produce high bio loads.

Here's a pic of the canisters my system came with which are

ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1353217989.018223.jpg

- Clear Water Sand filter - 100lbs premium sand
- Multi-cyclone 50 debris filter
- Ultima II 2000 filter
- 2 x Nuclear canisters - 25 micron c/w extra element

My ideal stock that I want to get would be:

Super Red Asian Aro
ST or CT datnoid
True Spotted Gar
flagtail prochilodus
2-3 Pbass
Short body RTC
Short body paroon shark
1-2 BD or Leo rays

As for the sump layout I'm thinking of

1st chamber trickle system
2nd chamber k1
3rd chamber ceramic media
4th chamber heaters and return

And in between chambers will be mechanical foam and a mechanical foam or filter floss on top of the drip tray for the trickle system. How does this design sound?
