Monster tank sump designs?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd look at something like one of the glass bead filters from WLim for a tank that size if I didn't live on the wrong side of the planet...

Here's how I'm doing the sump for my 1750L tank;

my goal is KISS and I'm not planning on having a massive bioload...

Your filtration Bret build to hold 10 big ray in it so it will be more then enough to handle any stock you plan to add in.

I kno Bret built a great system. I just wanted to get new ideas and try something new on the design with the sump cuz the previous sump was scrapped due to having a crack in it. I know the filtration is enough:)

My 2 cents...If you set it up in an unheated garage where it will get cold (ex- Canada), I would avoid any type of filtration that would expose the water to that cool air (ex- trickle filtration or air driven K1 Kaldness). Trickle filtration in a cold environment or pumping cold air into the water column (say to move K1 Kaldness) cools water down quite a bit...I'm pretty amazed at how much more frequently my heaters run when I run my air pump when it's cold.

It looks like you have plenty of mechanical filtration, so I would dedicate the majority of the sump to bio. With a 160G sump to work with, you will have plenty of bio whether your went with a trickle, submerged ceramic or K1 Kaldness. In a heated room, I would go with trickle or K1...in an unheated garage, I would go with submerged ceramic and insulate the heck out of everything.

Looking forward to seeing this beast up and running...whatever you end up doing, I know it's going to be nice.

Thanks Alex for the advice. I'll keep it in mind. My new tank will either be setup in a garage or inside the house. I prefer it to be inside the house but due the how big the tank is it'll be more chance of it being set up in the garage. Also if I do set it up at home in the garage there will be a lot more work ahead for me for it to work(renovations on insulating the garage, upgrading the breaker box, building a closer water source etc). This tank might even turn into a display tank at a shop as my friend and I are trying to open up a LFS within the next year. Who knows time will tell but all I know is I can't wait any longer for this beast to be up and running:) Getting a bit impatient here lol.
