Well, I think it's like a lot of CAs... They're aggressive and need a (relatively) big tank. You've got your mainstay CA species that have been in the hobby forever, and rarely will you see "newer" ones in a LFS.

Motas are one of my favorite parachromis species you don't often see them at most LFS but at the same they aren't hard to find if you know where to look.
 
I think aggression has alot to do with it. Alot of people including myself are not into keeping single species tanks.. And I dont breed fish, I look for nice specimens to put into my livingroom community tank...
 
iv only see 1 mota in one of the pet stores near me a few years ago an i grabed her.it took me another 2 years to get a male for her.now i sell some here an there to the local stores an they sell them for 25 buck at 2 inches.none of the store owners even knew what they were an still called them managuense till i made them get it correct an spelled out motaguense.
 
i have one and would recommend them. My favorite parachromis. Very deliberate in their actions and dont get too large, also got great colors but can be a little spooky
