I have a pretty decent strip with about 6 blue led's in it, when they are on alone, it is a very dull yet pretty light as most of you with these type of lights already know. There is some debate around the hobby about whether they are good or bad for the fish to be left on overnight. I understand that in the wild, most fish may have some moon light on them, but I also know that not only would the fish be much deeper in water where the light would be minimal, but most of the fish we keep are not from the wild (most not all) and have never been in natural waters with moon light. I wanted to experiment by trying to leave the light on overnight for a week, but when I checked on the tank last night at two intervals, the fish were still pretty active. This leads me to believe that the small amount of light is enough to keep them awake. I know if they don't get sleep then they get stressed. So the question is, will they get used to it and eventually sleep or will it build up and build up and they eventually get sick from no rest?

I really don't know but I was just wondering why you are wanting to leave them on all night if your sleeping anyways. Turning them off would save on the eletric bill.

And to more specifically answer your question, the strip has no sep switch for the LED's, it has one for each of the two T5's, but only unplugging the unit turnes of the moon lights. So in order for me to put the moon lights into use nightly, I need to leave the unit on, make sense?

I have noticed my fish stay quite active with my little blue LED lights on. So I have tentatively reached the same conclusion you have Joe. Not sure if they'd adjust over time...

My nighttime fish are active under the moonlights but everyone else goes to sleep. My lights are very dim and i keep them on 24/7.

I don't see why it would be any problem. Alot of the reef guys do this in order to simulate the "natural" cycle of light. Also, its cool to be able to see whats going on with the nocturnal life in your tank with out waking up the whole tank!

I want to add moonlights to my tanks too, Joe but I've had the same concerns. I know that moonlights come in several colors and intensities too. I believe that there are certain light colors that are invisible to fish but will still subtly illuminate tanks. Is red an invisible wavelength to fish? I've heard two different answers to this question so I'm not sure.
