Moon lights all night..good or not???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Joe I might have the same lights you do. I just bought DeepSea Dual T5 lights, that have separate "on/off" buttons but operate on the same plug. As soon as you plug in the unit, the LEDs come on.

I personally think they're too bright, but I found a way to work around the fact that the LEDs are always on. I bought a Coralife power strip with built-in timer, and plugged the light into the plug that's operated on the timer. At night, not only do the lights switch off but the power supply to the light switches off, so the LEDs are not on anymore. Works like a charm! You could also just use a cheap 24-hour timer, if you don't want the fancy power strip.

I have the same light, same filter, same kinda footprint... hmm Nat could it be.....:naughty: j/k

Yeah, I have it in there now, I run two sep light strips on that african tank to promote algae for the Mbuna to eat. I have one on a timer and the other I just switch on when I leave and then at night hour or so before the other one turns off. I just wanted to put the timer on the non lunar one and run it that way. After posting this question on three diff forums, I think im just gonna leave the lunars off at night. They seemed jumpy the following day after the light was on all night, not worth it for that many family members....

I don't see why it would be any problem. Alot of the reef guys do this in order to simulate the "natural" cycle of light. Also, its cool to be able to see whats going on with the nocturnal life in your tank with out waking up the whole tank!

Exactly I have lunar lights on my reed setup. First off several of my corals glow and it looks very cool. But more importantly you have to remember that light from the sun is bounced off the moon and emitted to earth. It's usually never pitch black. I keep mine on all night but my tank is in the living room so it doesn't bother me.
Some fish that are nocturnal use this to their advantage. Plus you have the ability to watch
