actually I think that I have the cheapest moonlight ever

I just use a regular lamp and a blue colored bulb might not be the wave lenght that you want but it works great for my FW fish and keeps them calm

i did the blue bulb too, but it had a spotlight effect. and thanks for all the advice. ill try some things and throw some pics up.

Radio shack has a great supply of LEDs, caps or anything you could think of very cheap.

One of those flexible rope light strips can be picked up dirt cheap. I've seen them for 5 bucks. Attach the light to your reflector, and you have a moonlight. OK, it's not the fancy blue color, its just a very dim light in the tank, but it works just fine. I call it a "nightlight".

has anyone used a blacklight? i heard they were bad for the fish. are they?

They make blue LED ropelights. Infact the more I think about it, the more I thnk I'm going to buy a string on post Christmas sale for a couple of bucks and have moonlights.

I have read in other forum posts that blacklight causes fish to go blind.
