Moonlighting

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Interesting. Maybe that highly artificial appearance is part of my reticence; it doesn't even look like the moonlight I assume it's meant to replicate.

Not at all, even my kessils don’t really look like moonlight. I’ve seen some that do produce a realistic moonlight, don’t know the brands, but I know you need a second mortgage to get them

I have a Current USA sattelite plus light for freshwater. I got it on sale at amazons black friday last year and its nearly doubled in price since then, but it has way more settings than I need. I use the daytime natural cloud setting most of the day and the lights vary in intesity looking very much like clouds blowing through the sky, I'm sure it's more appealing to me than the fish. It has 3 different moonlight settings and after the evening feeding I put it on the brightest one which is a hint of blue but mostly very dim white. It's mostly so the light isn't so bright as the rest of the house is dimmed for evening, I doubt the fish care, but it does look somewhat natural and my catfish gets more active while I can still see him.

I doubt the fish care,

This comment ^^ is right on the money, regarding freshwater anyway. I can't really comment on the lighting requirements of reef tanks.

I believe the fancy lighting nowadays, and there's a lot thanks to LED's, is more aimed at emptying the pockets of hobbyists who want all the whistles and bells, not what's beneficial or not to the fish.

For god sake I have a thunder and lightning mode on mine!! When it's on you get random bright white flashes. The remote controls that come with these things have more buttons than my TV remote!! I don't even use them!

Needless to say it's all wasted on me. I have mine constantly set on a daytime setting and a timer knocks it off for night time. It's all I need, and more importantly, it's all my fish need.

So, spending extra money on lighting that I certainly don't need......guilty as charged. I fell for it hook, line and sinker.

But it's like anything else, whatever floats your boat.

I do wonder actually if certain changes in lighting can trigger breeding in certain fish. Certain seasons are going to have changes in lighting, and if you simulate rain there would be a change in light too.
