That will take forever ^

I'm not in a hurry. Depends on the hardness of the water used too.

I have wood in larger tanks with 30% water changes and a year later there is still a bit of brown water.

Also please dont add charcoal... Use Activated Carbon ;)

Charcoal rulez! :headbang2

I have had a friend boil his and that made issues worse for him.

Eventually he gave up.

For me it was weekly h2o changes (the norm) for about three months. Slowly the water just got clearer.

Purigen can never hurt, and I used to run it on my planted, but I felt that in the low nutrient situation algae was more likely th thrive when conditions were less than ideal for my other plants.

UGH! lol

Interesting about the hard water/ soft water difference. Here in Florida our water is pretty hard.

There is no quick fix for tannins other than frequent huge water changes, and that only lasts a few days. I've learned to embrace the brown water in all my tanks. :) My fish certainly love it.

Yup, this is gonna sound stupid, but...........got a dishwasher????Run it through EMPTY first, to get rid of any soap. Put wood in TOP rack, run through as normal. ***JUST HAVE TO BE SURE THERE'S NO RINSING AGENTS OR SOAPS LEFT IN MACHINE, BEFORE PUTTING WOOD IN THERE.:nilly:Other idea,***Run washing machine through empty, and wipe everything off, make sure there's nothing in the 'softener' cup, or in the 'bleach' compartments. Fill clothes washer with hot water and let wood SOAK in there. ***DO NOT CLOSE THE CLOTHES WASHER WITH WOOD IN THERE!***Last but not least, buy a really large plastic garbage container, soak it in there.:D

We got a 125g upgrade for our turtles yesterday, and a fx5. Not setting it up until Saturday because we're going to modify the stand to add cabinet doors and a shelf to put the 20g crayfish setup on.

The fx5 came off another freshwater setup so it's got that bacteria in it. Would running it on the community tank be harmful? Thought it might help with the mess. Theres already a fluval canister on it.

Boil or coat with polyurethane I think it is.
