Okay not too happy here. Went to a lfs that I normaly dont go to found this awsome FRESHWATER? moray eel impulse buy after the guy said yeah it will go great in your tank well stupid me, stupid me right. Well now I have this 14n. moray eel with my clown knife, Tiger oscar and ornate bichir is this eel going to survive the freshwater????? I would love to go back and smack the lfs guy for selling me this thing since it is not supose to be freshwater really???? I have been reading alot on here about the eel any suggestions would be great. The eel is an amazing creature even though he took a good snap at my oscar this morning well he was just scared after I turned the lights on and the oscar was in his way. Also found out he can just about reach the top of the tank when standing in the corner AHHH!!! hope to god he dont jump out. I have a 55gallon tank. So what should I do????? How can I make the tank better so his chances of survival are greater?

well when there ok to be in freshwater but when they get older he is gonnda need more salt, and from what i have heard when he gets full grown he might need all salt. but for now he is goos just add a little salt its good for the fish, but if u wanna grow him out to be big and healthy u will at least haft to go brackish

Thanx for the response, I have added some salt (aquarium salt) but I have read that it should be sea salt? not sure if that would be okay with my other fish in the tank. What a snafoo I have. He seems to be doing okay, he has a few hiding spots but is moving around the tank and not hiding much.

That's Gymnothorax tile, a brackish to marine species. Your other fish should be fine with up to a tablespoon of sea salt per gallon, because that's what is normally used in treatment of FW fish. That should net you a specific gravity of around 1.003, which should be enough to keep the moray eating regularly, although it would prefer higher salinity, especially as it grows. Ultimately, it belongs in a brackish tank with a SG of 1.005 to 1.015, or roughly 1/4 to 3/4 strength SW.

Only opening I have are where the filters are would he be able to jump there do you think?

Should I have some sand in the tank for subtrate? I have small gravel.

Sorry for all the questions just want to make sure I can do everything possible. Wish i could give him his own tank but I do not have a spare that would be big enough.
