They're not afraid of flowing water. If the space is big enough for the eel, you need to treat it as a definite exit. Gymnothorax tile is born in freshwater and sometimes eats in it. LFS's like to leave the whole saltwater part out so they can sell more of them. I have one in my full marine tank. I want to note that if you are asking about a hole that it might escape from, than that's enough concern for me to cover it. It just sucks finding the little suckers under the fish tank stand.

Well sadly I don't have to worry about him getting out anymore 
The oscar and the eel went at it bad the other day and the eel lost poor thing it was awful I tried to get him out when I saw them fighting but was not quick enough.
