moray eels worth it

I don't know bout every body else but I wuld tell the guy at your lfs. What he is doing to the eel. If you plan on geting one don't set up a full brackish tank and drop him in I wuld set up a tank. With fresh water get your eel then add the salt slowly if ya just drop him in brackish you will more than likly destroy his kidnys. And kill him. But if you truly want to get one I wuld do as much resurch as possible befor jumping head first.

i have a fresh water eel, Gymnothorax tile. he's a beauty. i just made the tank he's in slightly brackish, by this i mean i just added marine salt when i was doing water changes and never used much method. the fresh water fish will tolererate brackish. my eel has doubled in size since i bought him 6 months ago. he's about 13 inch now. eats well. does most of his swimming at night but you do see him during the day.

i wouldnt trade my eel for the world

It's just not worth it to try and keep them in freshwater when brackishwater tanks aren't hard to set up or maintain.

And I'd assume like most morays they will generally hang in the rocks with their head sticking out, but will come out to feed.

For me personally, if I'm going to set up a tank that requires saltwater I'd just do a full marine moray though, rather than trying to acclimate a fish to brackish.

And the other thing is, if you buy one of these "freshwater" moray eels you are giving the shop owner and the suppliers money and making them think that they should send out more. And the majority are going to be bought by people that don't know any better, and keep them in freshwater permanently and kill them.

So if you want a moray, I'd honestly go with one of the species that's already supplied in saltwater and set up a saltwater tank. A saltwater snowflake moray eel (not same species as the "freshwater" labelled snowflakes) doesn't get that big and doesn't take a complicated setup.

Just my 2 cents.

ha, i checked out an lfs near me today and say freshwater moray eels! i asked for the species name and the manager questioned me a bunch like i didnt need to know anything other than what she was telling me. i asked them about being brackish, at first she said no, then she changed to they would do better in brackish. then she said if i add aquarium salt while doing waterchanges it would be the same thing as a brackish tank

thats the same **** i was told. must be in the crap fish trader handbook. douche bags.

lol, i knew enough to know there wasnt any true freshwater moray eel, but didnt know enough facts to back up what i was thinking. i hate lfs ppl, they tell you whatever you wanna hear

the guy at my lfs sold my wife one for my cichlid tank. i was suspicious about it being freshwater, and went to the lfs myself. he said it was freshwater. he looked at me kind of strange two days later when i came back telling him I was setting up a brackish tank and needed a hydrometer, marine salt and lace rock. only lfs in town,

anyway, my g. tile is doing great. he comes out of the rocks for about a minute and goes crazy every day. other than that, he stays down in the rocks with his head sticking out. I feed him raw shrimp, stuck on the end of a skewer.

whatever they think you wanna hear. I was excited about setting up a brackish tank. that would've been a selling point for me.
