I have a 55 gallon tank that is currently home to four three inch clown loaches, a four inch pictus cat, a bushy nose pleco, a butterfly pleco and a stunted bala that is only about five-six inches. It was my brothers who left it in a thirty gallon tank until I rescued him.

I've read that pictus cats are social and was told he might school with the loaches but instead he just hides all day, would getting another one be likely to bring him out more or is it ill advised since he has been a loner for awhile? Also the bottom of the tank is full of life but the rest is fairly empty. Are there any mid range fish that would work with my current stock list? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

those clown loaches will get pretty big.

check these ones out, some are over a foot long.

Alot of bottome dwelling fish. i wouldn't add anymore but perhaps like m1ste2tea said try to trade out for something different

Or could keep them and upgrade the tank to something more suitable later on when those loaches reach full size which does take quite some time ...

Well though I think your tank is pretty set. I would also say that maybe you could add 1 or 2 pictus. You really don't have anything overly aggressive.
