Okay, so my last go ended in disaster, well time for a slight change of tack. Going to start a timber frame pond a la Midnight ~ 400 gallons. Put styrene insulation sheet inside the wood frame and a pond liner. Three Questions for you DIY Geniuses;

1) Will Plecs be okay in a pond liner or will they hole it?

2)Is there a way to solvent seal polystyrene so the insulation box could act as a water tight barrier in case the liner was holed?

3) If I routed a groove in the top of the timber, then pushed the liner into it, then slotted sheets of glass on top, could it be sealed with silicone (glass/pond liner). If not do you know how it could be sealed?

I'm thinking if I put 18" of glass on top I could use thinner glass than with a window...plus I only have to worry about 1 seal, as a pose to 4 with a window, and if it does fail I still have a pond lol!

was thinking 2m by 2m by 61cm for the wood lattice plus extr height with the glass....
that would give ~645 US Gallons before the glass.....

Ordered timber for 2m by 2m (6 and a half' by 6 and a half')...Should be here in an hour or two.

Hmmm, missus put an end to the 2 by 2, shes insisting the spare bed stays...boring.:screwy: Mind you might not be too bad as I dont know if the floor could have taken 4 metric tons...better save that one for downstairs!!! She says I can do a 2 by 1.... Okay, timber being placed...heres a CRAP pic...my web cam sucks....Get the chipboard tommorrow.....

If I fiberglass the chipboard would silicone seal it, or would I need a more hardcore epoxy?

Okay, scrub the pond liner idea...This was suppose to be a cheap replacement for the kiddie pond, but now its past that mark of trying to save money! Gonna gave in to popular consent and epoxy it with pond armour...

So if it aint gonna be cheap, it better be good. Want to put in 2 windows of 6 mm glass 50cm by 50cm (~1.6ft by 1.6ft), 14 inches above the base... Water level will be below the top of these, perhaps as low as half way, to give a pool depth of ~2ft.

Then I want to put a light frame over the whole thing and glaze it with cheapo green house glass, 3mm and 2ft by 2ft. Get to have an above water display too, with some flowers for the missus... she can stick here orchids in there and I can get some poison dart frogs! See about some other bugs that may provide some natural feed for the fish like fruitflies poss leafcutter ants...This should also reduce the humidity to near zero.

Got some 18mm plyboard arriving tommorrow to be screwed on as a base, along with some more CLS for the cage...

Any ideas or hints?

Sounds cool. Would be great if you got a little portion of eco system going. Not sure I would like a colony of ants living above my tank though. I can see them making a break for it when you open the top to feed!!

I think your wife was right. 4 metric tons would indeed be VERY brave upstairs. I don't know when your house was built but I certainly wouldn't trust mine with that weight :eek:

Oh, Looking at a real volume (not outside measurements) of 368 US Gallons (258g main tank plus 2 55g tanks). Should be big enough to house a nice big shoal of neons! But equally not soo big it ends up it the living room! I make it 1.4 metric tons, no worse than if I was having an orgy with the russian womens olympic shotput team...a possibility every architect must consider by law, no?

And Basslover, you might see this pond by 4th july lol!

You'll have to get a proper tour of all the amazing sites LonDoN has to offer...Tower Bridge, the Eye, Nelsons Column, MY Tropical Pond....There going to add it to the bus tours as soon as I'm finished, so I'll hurry it up for you!
