hello all, I spent the weekend starting the first few steps of free flight with my macaw, Maya. Her wings are still clipped and she can still only get a foot or two of lift from a running start but I have been working with her to build up some endurance for her eventual flight. I have ordered her harness and hope to have her pretty well trained in flight by the time her wings are back to their full potential. after that, in a year or two's time, I hope to be able to remove the harness from her and have her fully trained to fly back to me on command.

Any ways, I am super excited to be getting started so here are some pics of Maya and I working on her endurance....

awesome!! she is beautiful

She's Beautiful! I have a pair of B&G's, (somewhere between a breeder pair and our pets).

Our Greenwing, Addison, has all of her feathers, and I think that she is smart enough to come back to us...But I'm too scared. We keep her on a harness anytime she goes out.

Looking forward to see your progress. I've never known anyone to train one like this... I think Addison would sit in a tree and just laugh at us for a couple days.

I am a little worried about it as well but before I ever dare to take the harness off of her, I am going to be absolutely, 100% sure that she will come back and I am not expecting to be able to do this within the next year, I know it is going to take a lot of training and patience.

One thing that I have seen done that I am going to try is attaching the harness to one of those retractable dog leashes and try getting her to fly from one person to the other. this way you still have control if she tries to fly away into a tree or something.

Let's see some pics of your birds too!

wow that is awesome... and what a gorgeous bird... mine took off out of her harness and ended up in the top of a tree........i was so scared... but the sweet cockatoo finally came to me.... it is so nice seeing them out to enjoy the nature.
