I got my 50 gallon sump about finished (needs scrubbies and drip plate installed yet). I tested it last night and I finally got it to where the sump works. I tried running my 75 "refugium" pumped in the 300 by an XP3 and drained back into the 75 through a 2" overflow (DIY out of PVC conduit fittings) but the sump couldn't keep up because it only has a 1.5" overflow (used bulkhead fittings). If I would have a 1.5" overflow for the 75, would it still not be able to keep up? It doesn't really matter at this point, because I'm just going to pull out the 75 and run Stability in hopes that the ammonia levels will stay down, but I would like to know.

My other question is when I build another sump, does it have to use the same pump and be at the same water level as the current sump? I don't like that the two overflows are side-by-side and that I'll only be able to use one overflow per sump, but I may make a back-up DIY overflow system in case one gets clogged.

FYI, the crappy pump I'm using is a Quiet One 6000 inside the sump. I am probably going to drill my other sump, which is probably going to be a 40 breeder so I can run a better pump externally.

BUMP...anyone?

I got the sump set up and running last night. I'll post some pix of the setup once I clean the tank and all that.

Somethings not clicking with me here. Post up some pics and we'll have a look.

K, I'll try to get some pix tonight. I have the 50 sump installed and running now and not the XP3, so I won't have any pictures of that. I'll try to explain it a little better...

The overflow for the sump, which sat about 3" lower than the 75, is 1.5" piping. The 75 had a 2" overflow, which had an XP3 working as a pump to pull water out of the 75 and put it back in the 300. When I tried running both the 75 and the 50 sump, the sump couldn't keep up. Is that because the overflows were different sizes or are there other factors?

When I make the other sump, it will also use a 1.5" overflow. Do I need to use the same pump or can I use a different one?

without the pics I couldn't be sure, but the pipe size should matter. It sounds to be most closely related to the height at which the overflows are positioned. That, or your pump might be a little too much for what you have going on. I'll take a look at the pics when you get them posted and see what we can come up with.

Edit: First sentence.....I meant shouldn't, not should.

i took some pix last night, but didn't get a chance to get them up. I'll post them after work.

Did you get those pics?

sorry, I never got a chance to transfer them from my camera. I will try to tonight but if not, I'll def get them up tomorrow. I'll PM you when they're up.
