More tank pics, updated

These acaras will drive me to drink. I logged on to work then decided to check on Rocky. HE JUMPED. Laying next to his bucket in the sink. The cover was knocked off. I saw he was still kind of wet though he didn't move. Did the drill. Air stones over gills, full blast water in bucket. He was slow to come around and I was pretty worried. Two things gave me hope. He never stopped breathing and his body color didn't change. Because of his eye I left his bucket bare.

The one treatment of Lifeguard has had a little affect on his eye. The middle part is a bit less cloudy. It's still puffy but not worse. I might switch to the API or Kanaplex to speed the process. Rocky kept laying on his side which gave me an idea. I put a skim of sand in the bucket and plants up top. A few minutes later he was up and swimming around. Heard a thump when I approached the bucket. Right now there's just epsom salt in fresh water for him . Meds come later today.

I've discovered the hard way acaras are very powerful jumpers that are good at busting out of covered tanks. Once they jump they 'travel' long distances. Every single acara I've had (four) has now flown out. Felix and Nemo were several feet away when I found them. Jazz in the garbage disposal. They're a heavy fish for their size and meaty.

Can someone post a list of gram positive vs gram negative medicines?

Sorry to hear this; nothing worst than realizing how big and bulky one of your fish has become until you are handling the semi-dried-out body after a jump. :( Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

Rocky is relaxed in the bucket now. He's got his first dose of the API. No heater, water temps around 74ish. Will take a pic later. Jazz also appears relaxed in her bucket and is sitting normally (no nose down) one more treatment and she goes back. I will coordinate her return with the next 225 water change.

Here's poor Rocky and his bum eye. He's on day 2 of API Cure treatment. Should I continue the salt? It has had no effect so far. The center part of the eye is semi clear but gel like. Any input is appreciated. No heater, temp around 74.

This main thread is always going to be a journal of the good, bad and ugly. I like to make it fun and entertaining to read. But times like this there's no fun to be had. I'm not a perfect fishkeeper. I've made boneheaded and unintentional mistakes.

I lost my beautiful severum Corn today. He pretty much died while I last posted pictures in the disease thread earlier today.

My acara Rocky is battling popeye (some progress) from the same tank so I acknowledge my part in all this. I kept up with the water changes (85% per week) and filter clean. What I failed to notice was that all the decor that helped fry survive hid a lot of them. Once I removed most of the plants I was astounded at the number of fish. No wonder I was battling water quality. That combined with the accelerated activity of the hrp hive Corn likely had long term stress, got weakened and you know the rest. By the time I tried treating him it was already too late.

The filters had stuff in them at the bottom of the media I missed as well. It explained why they kept getting clogged even after I would clean the pads.

I plan to see if a local rescue can take these hrps. Pet stores won't just take any amount of fish you have (they always ask how many fish).

My other acara Jazz was completely normal after being treated for swim bladder/bouyancy issues. Two days later she's right back to the nose down bit with her tube out. Yesterday she was shaking plants for a nest. She doesn't stay at the top like before. I'm now convinced it's a behavioral thing with those male hrps in the 225 (some of them are going too). I don't look forward to stripping down the tank to catch them.

Corn's stats: 8 1/4", 295 grams. It's been a bizarre and sad week. Raising fish to adulthood is fun but makes it hard when you lose them. I just went outside to chill.

Bizarro world continues.

This morning I check Rocky's hospital tank. His eye continues to heal and looks like something is sloughing off (like a melting ice cube). But now he's getting it in the other eye! It makes no sense...he got a full fresh treatment this morning so hopefully it won't advance on the other side. Full treatment is the API body cure/epsom/clean water/stress coat. Unlike the first eye that went full on bulge overnight this one is 'puffy.' He seemed more responsive today which is curious too. This whole situation is weird asf.

Do you have access to maracyn (I forget 1 or 2) - that could be more effective on popeye.
