I saw a thread started by flowerpower about the Barred midas morphed... All this is new to me and seems very interesting, now i have a question regarding that subject.
Do all Barred midas morph into "piebald"?? If so... at what size do they start doin this? do they stay that way forever??

I dont think so....

Midas/RD all color morph throughout their juvie stages. I just bought one about a month or 2 ago and it's already went from white, creamsicle, black, and orange. It's completely normal. Not all of them go "peibald" though. Most end up orange if youre dealing with midas/rd's, as far as a Barred Midas, most will stay dark with hints of red if its an actual barred.

My baby Midas was very pale peach when first purchased (1.5") now at 2 1/4" starting to turn a slight bit deeper orange with black in its anal fin. I cant wait to see how it will turn out. It really is strange that they can change like that.

Most RD/Midas will either go through a colormorph or will retain their bars from the juvii stage. Piebalds are rare which is why so many want one. Honestly I prefer colored. You never know until their full size what color they will be, but even then they can go through another morph. Doesen't matter what way you go though. Can't go wrong with Amphilophus in my opinion.

Thanks guys. I asked because I have barred midas at 5" and I bought it because I've seen a picture of one of the members on here that had an adult barred midas that still had the bars and is really beefy in structure. And I love the way it looked! So I'm hoping mines would just stay the same and keep its bars when grown into an adult.. :-)

I figured I would use this thread to ask the question since it's the same situation verses starting a new one. I just picked up a little midas about 2". I picked him up at a petsmart, and he was the runt of the tank. The reason I liked him over the rest was because he has a bit of black patches among the pale orange in his body and fins. I know there is a lot of uncertainty among these color patterns and morphs, but what are the chances he will keep some of this black as he grows? I would actually like him to retain some of the black as I think it just looks sweet! Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

That's wierd, I know I have seen Juvies change color when adults but I have seen NO change in mine and I had him since he was <2"
