Mosquitoes in top off water.

The mosquito larvae are in a separate tank, an 18g that i use for top off water to replace evaporated water. Not a place for fish as there is no filter on it or heater or anything like that.

Hello; I keep zebra dianoes in quarintine tanks to keep down the mosquito larvae. I sort of gathered that the OP was using an empty tank to store extra water and that they may not have wanted the water to be always ready to hold fish. Perhaps I miss read. I store water for changes in containers for at least a week to allow the chlorine to dissipate in order to avoid the use of chemical conditioners. Perhaps the OP dumps straight tap water into the storage tank from time to time?

Note - My tap water does not have the other additives that do not dissipate and am saying this to warn that all tap water cannot be aged this way.

I use tap water with prime for top off and water changes.

Hello; Sounds like the holding tank can have a few fish in it or the idea of making a screen type cover will work if you do not want fish in the water prior to using it as top off water.

Trust me when I say this; mosquito fish are one of the toughest fish alive, and can live in ANYTHING pretty much. And thrive at that. putting a few in there wont harm anything, and the fish will be happy.
