Most active/personable 5-8" cichlid?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
get a green terror, Cuban cichlid, or red tiger mota. don't let anyone tel u tht u cant have any of these fish I just mentioned cuz the chances of any of these fish reaching over 8 is quite slim. I say u get something nice don't waste a whole 40 gal on a stupid salvini or jewl. its bare minimum but still 40 g can hold 1 single bad ass fish. just gotta keep the water quality up
salvini are great fish and don't do rtm. I have had two females and they both hit 8" in the first year.

I was going to suggest severums but they really need a 75-90 gallon tank for their adult size. Ditto for gold saums. Go with the blue acara or the jewel. Peacock eel would be good too, they can be trained to hand feed, but are jumpers and can be kind of shy if there are other fish in there.

I have a small green terror in my tank with large Oscar tank mate he is very active and have been working out well

I think most folks expect that the OP's fish will be in this 40 gallon tank for life. This is too small for the adult sizes of either of those fish alone, much less together. If the OP gets a larger tank in the future, then sure, I could see a small oscar and GT working together.

eexcuse me sir, Jewel cichlids are NOT stupid. they are just as personable as an oscar and are pound for pound IMO one of the more aggressive cichlids in the hobby. he asked for a 6-8 inch cichlid and jewels can get 6 inches EASILY! Not many cichlids are as beautiful as a full grown 7 inch male red jewel cichlid.

That's interesting, I wasn't aware red jewels could get that big. Every site I read said they reach 5-5.5 inches. A 7" would be a pretty amazing fish.

Thanks for the list as well, I never knew of the grammodes. Nowhere near sells them, so I'd have to order them online.

Jeffrapps seems to be pretty reputable, so I'm sure he'd have some.

Don't the female green terrors reach 6-8"? I wouldn't be interested in a male anyway, not a fan of the hump.

The largest jewel I have ever seen is 6". If they get any bigger than that, it would surprise me.

Rapps has some great quality stuff. If you do get some grammodes, you can't go wrong with his fish.

Female green terrors will reach the 8-10" range. A little tight for a 40, but still doable. I hear ya on the hump. Never been a fan of any fish with the hump. But it's a all a matter of opinion. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. :)
