MOST AGGRESSIVE AFRICAN CICHLIDS

odd, I always though that africans were meaner and more aggressive pound for pound, or is it ounce for ounce in this case?, and that they could shred larger americans assuming they weren't lunch sized to them.

i had a buttokoferi once. it was the meanest sob i've ever owned in 20 years. next in line would be a crabro bumblebee. good riddance to both of those.

The reason most people do not mix African and CA/SA chiclids is they have different food and water parameters to flourious. Africans do best with a PH of 7.2 to 8.0 or higher even. While the CA/SA do best in a PH near 6.0. Protien levels are different and if you feed an African food higher then 45% protien your risking them getting Bloat. Not saying it has not or can not be done but is not the best conditions for the fish to thrive.

Other Tilapias are pretty aggressive too - I have a long history of keeping several different Tilapias in CA/SA tanks with no problem.
I even have a small Tropheus in a community tank.

Never kept them but hear Hemichromis elongatus is the meanest African Cichlid

I kept buttikoferi with SA cichlids once.......i think i had texas or GTs and oscar or smth like that...... some big fishes anyways. In less then a week I had to take him back to the lfs!! None of my SA/ca cichlids were spared, every single one of them was so banged up i thought they're gonna die. And the buttikoferi was only around 5" with the other fish at least an inch or two bigger!! I don't keep africans much but i'll tell u one thing that fish is one mean son of satan!

I had a few buccochromis haps at 8 inches and 10 inches with adult geophagus Altrifons and old 7inch roseline sharks in an 85 for 3 years with 0 promblems. The buccos ignore the other fish and vise versa.
