wrong the alligator snapping turtle here in the mississipi river valley is the worlds largest freshwater turtle and the worlds toughest turltle by far!

Actually they are not the world's largest freshwater turtle. There is a giant turtle in Vietnam that exceeds the size of the alligator snapper.

found this on the net .

Two rare Asian softshells vie for the title of largest freshwater turtle. A Pelochelys bibroni from southeast Asia measured 51 inches long and is estimated by Dr. Peter Pritchard to have weighed 400 pounds. The narrow-headed softshell Chitra indica, commonly reaches 36 inches and is rumored to reach as much as 72 inches. According to Pritchard's Encyclopedia of Turtles the alligator snapping turtle, Macroclemys temminckii, is the USA's largest freshwater turtle at 76 kilograms (167 pounds). Among the Pleurodire (sideneck) turtles, the largest is the South American Arrau, Podocnemis expansa. Females may reach 90 kilograms (200 pounds).
but theres a 249 pound Alligator in Tennessee Aquarium .With his hooked jaws, ridged shell and mottled skin, the Tennessee Aquarium's newest dent could be mistaken for a prehistoric creature. but

There are only several of the vietnam turltes left, (yes I researched), they are supposedly bigger than the alligator snapper......I have seen All. snapping turtles in the Osage river in Missouri get over 32 inches long. In Bass pro in Springfield Mo they have one thats about 30 inches long......they would eat those vietnamese turtles for lunch, dont believe me look at the pictures. I have pushed one approx. 24 incher away with a 3in wide green branch while noodlin and he easily snapped the branch in half with his jaws!
