I've done this before on our table. I sat a big vase on top of a battery powered led disk the same size as the vase base and put a thin layer of white sand on the bottom. The light easily penetrated the dusting of sand and looked really awesome when the ambient light was dim. The lack of a filter meant daily 50% wc which was a pita tho.

If running a cord is problem you could maybe use a battery operated air pump like this one http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3693 and use some kind of a mini air driven sponge filter. You can even make the sponge filter urself

Centerpiece with no wires is a pain in the butt. You'll have to do lots of water changes. I recently upgraded my fish bowls to tanks, the fish are happier and they are easier to maintain. Mine are the Marineland/Tetra Crescent 3s.
