I will be getting my new tank this weekend and would like to know the most efficient way to clean large amounts of sand before putting it in the tank. The sand states that it has been washed but as we all know (there is washed and there is washed).

A rotating drum with a fine screen is the most efficient way. Got one?

5 gallon bucket. Water constantly flowing into the bucket, keep stirring with your hand until the water on top stays clear.

chuck in a bg bucket half way fill it and then get a hose to it swish it around with your hand and then pour it out then do it agen thats how i did my sand in no time ddnt even cloud :)

I have been curious about this to, as I would like to put sand in my aquarium also. I was thinking of pouring the sand into my cement mixer with the hose in it, and letting it run for a half hour or so. I would think that it would do a pretty good job of cleaning the sand.

I don't have a cement mixer either but it sounds good, but wouldn't the cement that had been previously mixed up in this mixer contaminate the sand being cleaned. I am about to look at the thread listed below and thanks for all the replies. The more the merrier keep replying all suggestions greatfully accepted.

If its larger gravel I use a kitchen colander ( without anyone seeing) Hold it under running water and shake the colander. Keep a large container for the clean gravel nearby and just toss it in. Once the container is full or all the gravel gone you are done. I did over 150lbs of coarse gravel like this in a short time.
