I've recently set up the 240gal in the basement. But as I life in Canada winters are incredibly cold. And a heater with an aquarium in the basement will have quite the workout. I know it isn't much out of the pocket and it's still summer. But it doesn't hurt to be prepares as it does add up in the long-run. So I thought why not save some dollars where I can?

In your opinion, what heater does their job best?

Thanks for the help!

Watt per gallon performance. Eheim jaegar. a 300w jaegar does up to 260 gallons.

At my work I have 2 arowana tanks (250gallons between them). The tanks are in the warehouse, and it gets pretty cold in winter. I have a 2 x 300w jaegars in the sumps of each tank and each tank doesn't have more than 0.5 degrees celcius swing in temperature.

I like using multiple medium sized heaters. I have two 250w heaters that are directly in the path of the output of two canisters. It seems to heat more evenly and make each work less since there are two heaters spread a few feat apart, as opposed to one giant one trying to do everything.

As far as brands go... a Watt of heat is a Watt of heat, so there will not be any measurable difference in efficiency between brands. Don't be fooled by one brand's package suggestions compared to another.

As Dookie mentioned, insulating the tank is the way to improve heat efficiency. You can paint the back of the tank, as many of us do anyway, and use the paint as an adhesive to secure styrofoam to the back. The same approach can be used for the sides and bottom. Make sure you have proper glass lids covering the top and for added insulation make a canopy.

And for God's sake man move somewhere warmer!
