most influencial factor in fast fry development?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What to do with all the fry? Feed them to a larger fish? Selling them is not practical it seems to me. I have a bunch of Texas Cichlid fry, and I'm not sure what to do with them.

Depends on the fish. Some pet stores will gladly buy them once they are 1" or longer if it is something they want. You could also ship them if there was a demand. I'll probably grow out a batch of Festae fry once they breed as many people in this area have already shown desire for them.

I breed now mostly for food reasons. When breeding your own feeders, you have a much lower chance of introducing disease into your tank that may have gone unnoticed at the LFS. My convicts supply me with a steady stream of offspring; you can't give them away if you wanted.

proper feeding, temp and water quality are important, but im gonna say proper feeding is most important overall IME

In this order:
1. Water quality
2. Frequent feedings
3. Quality of food (I try not to do crushed flake no matter the quality of the flake due to its effect on water quality) Decapsulated BS eggs then straight to micro pellets for me.
4. Less competition(= more access to food)
5. Tank size: brood size ratio (probably linked to #1 since I can only do tank maintenance 1-2x per week max) A 40 breeder is usually good enough to get 200 fry to 1" IME.
This is what works for me but others may disagree.

All the fry I left with the parents seem to grow faster than the one,s that are separated. But I would also so water quality and feeding more often.
