when i pass the cichlid isle at petland (usually to get to the exodons). i look at the cichlids they got for sale and they are in this order:

Asst. Oscars
Jaguar Cichlid
Peacock Cichlid
Jack Dempsey
Pink Convict
Butterfly Cichlid
Tiger Cichlid.

I keep looking at the Jags noticing they have a much more barracuda-like mouth and shape. making me think they are more "built for the kill". atleast in evolution.

so whats the most predatory cichlid?

pbass are more predatory ?

whenever i think of bass, i think of the singing fish on the wall. or an american father's idea of "catch of the day"

This would be way to opinionated to give a definitive answer. You are spot on about evolution, and jags large telescopic mouths. I would not say they are the most predatory though. If you want to know, out of curious curiosity, the quick answer, is, there is no answer..If you want to know, because you think vicious fish are "cool", you should study cichlids a bit more, and I think you will find yourself slipping into a niche, that has absolutely nothing to do with aggression. It is a bit juvenile to gawk fish aggression and fights, however, it is quite mature to read until your head spins, and select your fish based on your capabilities, and gained knowledge

hey, hey, you give me no credit for the daily headspinning i live and breathe at work, home, and while i play. lol.

sometimes i will take a step back from my deep abyss of research and try to gain fresh perspective with the simplest form of the question to the forums every now and then. usually its a good guide to watch the forum population point to a few select species. and even then, i usually don't purchase every fish i ask questions about. i merely seek knowledge.

my tank is done for the stock. everything else goes into the pond.

Sorry if I made it sound like I do not think you research. 5 star jewels are pound for pound the "baddest" cichlid...(they are not Ca/Sa though), as far as new world, Dovii, Umbee, Beani, Jags, Motags, anything parachromis, or nandopsis, Haitensis, of course RD/Midas, and some viejas....This is all MPO.

In my opinion, the most predatory = the biggest appetite. In that case, it would definately be Oscars. They will eat anything and everything that will fit into their mouths. Their appetites know no bounds. But, if by most predatory, you mean most aggressive/territorial, it'd probably be the jags.

Similar to what Spizz is saying, just because a fish eats other fish doesn't make it particularly aggressive -- "predatory" yes, but aggressive not necessarily. Pbass are a good example. They can be quite good tankmates as long as they can't swallow you! On the other hand, a 3" fry guarding neet is about the most evil creature in water!

All that said, IMO Pbass in SA and dovii in CA are at the top of the "most predatory" list for cichlids. As far as viciousness is concerned, I'd have to pick neets as the pound for pound champ. They can intimidate fish many times their size.......right up until Mr. Monster Dovii wanders by!

Out of that list if your talking straight up aggressive I would say the Butterfly Cichlid assuming that we are talking about Buttikefori or Hornet Cichlid.

my orange pike is my most facinating hunter in my tank, but my dovii is the most agressive hunters.
and what i mean by aggressive is my dovii will not give up the chase till he has his meal or someone els gets it, and he will tear apart his prey. my pike will hide very still under a log till an unexpecting victum comes within striking distance then gulp its gone, very swift and fast.
