Most Profitable Fish To Breed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Most expencive is not always the most profitable... you have to have a stable maket (customers)...a steady supply (reliable breeders) and low overhead. Koi and Discus have traditionally made good profits.

Electric Jack Dempseys are very profitable. Koi not so much, you have to consider. How many people in your area will have a multi thousand gallon pond to house koi? How many people will have the equipment, time and money to correctly house discus?

Many people have the correct equipment to house EBJD's.

I would angel fish.. there pretty easy to breed.. every lfs wants them... but you have to go with large numbers of fry to make it... figure a pair produce 200 sell able fry.. lay eggs about 10 times a year.. (which is probably more 16 times a year) 2000 fry total. buck each $2000 now do it with 10 pairs.. about $20K a year.. not bad, but you have to include water bill and elec. and food cost... but once you get it all down, buy in bulk and you'll save a bundle...

another thing.. I was told by a guy that breed angels for a living... he said you need 4 types of fish to breed to make it as a profitable business, so you can live on it... because all fish have high sell times and low ones.. so you have to find out in your area what sells at what time.. and you always have the internet to help sell stuff.. the only difference now is the higher shipping cost... most lfs's will buy from someone local because they don't want to pay high shipping cost...

AAA grade flowerhorn, the super nice stuff. You can sell fry for $25-$50 a pop even at 1 inch. You can select the few more impressive fry and grow them out to around 6" and sell them for around $400 each. Not so bad seeing as you can very likely get 100 good fish out of each batch. Just food for thought. =P

Bottom line is that to actually produce EBJDs, you need an EBJD to spawn with a BGJD. This is why most breeders are unwilling to sell BGJDs. If you pair one with a EBJD, you can save years of breeding, feeding and rearing time.

BGJD are CHEEP AND EASY TO GET!!!!!!! In fact many breeders will just give the BGJD away. I breed jacks. All of my breeding pairs are BGJD BGJD pairs. These produce less EBJD, however they are usualy less beaky than those from EBJD BGJD pair.
Go to this web site if you are interested in Jacks... http://dempsey.6.forumer.com/index.php

Lots of good suggestions here. I will add to what someone else has already said. Its all about supply and demand. If its too expensive or something that grows too large, you will only have a small market to sell to.

Some shrimp and crayfish sell well. Discus, angelfish, some cichlids, endlers etc are pretty good money.
