Motoro Eating out of my Hand

A bee sting nearly makes me cry!

It makes you wonder how much pain Steve Irwin may have been in before he died? Steve was a big hero of mine even though he did silly things. I was amazed that once he made big money he started to buy land to conserve it!

I never heard of any long time effects of getting stung. But I do hear from everyone I have talked to it was the worst pain they have ever been in. It not like a bee sting like some might think or anywhere close. I hear it is very very painful. Just be cautious and I wouldn't do it too often if I were you. It's a very cool thing though, a fish eating from your hand.

im guessing more like a jellyfish sting maybe or possibly a weaver fish sting like the ones that live in shallow waters round the english coast ? i duno ive not been stung myself.

i dont have any problems putting my hands in the ray tanks just as i dont have a problem going in the neighbours yard with the big dog and a treat in my hand.

would be interesting to hear from someone who has been properly stung though as im not going out of my way to try it myself. oh and then ask them to stand on a weaver fish for me so they can describe the comparison in details :D :D

wheres the feeding vid !

About 15 years ago I ran a lfs and I also used to sell a lot of Tarantulas...I was never bitten but one of my customers bought a lot of spiders and he came in after every one to show me how swollen his fingers were from being bitten......seems some people would provoke that sorta thing.

It's on comparison to have a rusty jagged knife stabbed into you, the kind that has barbs facing the handle so that it clings to chunks of your flesh if you try to pull it out. And then you deal with the protein venom which starts necrosis on the skin around the wound. Not a funny experience.

I have stood on a weever fish loads of times. One time all three main spines left their protein sheaths in my foot. Absolute agony but that is all. Their spines are nice and smooth like hyperdermic needles.
Whereas the spine on my flower ray would go right through my arm and probably tear off in there. Followed by the symptoms gshock speaks of.
With regards long term effects there was someone on the forums who did not go to hospital and was still suffering nerve damage months after being tagged.
I used to hand feed when my rays were small but there is no way I would now.

x2. Small guys are okay, but once you start getting rays with barbs a couple inches long capable of going through your hand, it starts turning into a bad idea.

About the closest ill do is stick a chunk near the top edge and drop it as mine climbs the side. Im too chicken to try and feed it completely by hand, too much risk IMHO. Small barbless ones I might consider it, but not with the length of my rays barbs.

you got pics of your wound ? how long did it take to get better ?

nobody here is saying its not going to hurt but some of these people might want to be more carefull when handfeeding their dogs. they could get bitten, have long lasting nerve damage and possibly have to deal with serious infection leading to blood poisoning etc .

being carefull is all well and good and im sure we all are even when handfeeding if thats what we choose to do. but with nobody showing actual evidence of being stung or how bad it actually is fatal or not, i dont think ill stop putting my hands in my own tank . and if the day comes where i think its too much of a risk to put my hands in the tank i might have to reconsider keeping rays at all .

still be nice to hear from someone who has actually been stung though and has a couple of pics to prove it.

In Dr Ross's Aqualog book there is a pick of a wound on a foot where the barb did not stay in the wound, it looks like a blister the size of an egg and very inflamed.
