Just bought a 16 in diameter royal motoro. It is a 600 gal tank with pbass, new set up but reused filters for bio. Put the ray in last night and he was motoring around the tank this morning and there seemed to broken up slim floating around the tank. An hour later it had cleared. Then I looked at him and the substrate(filter gravel about a 1/8 inch in diameter) was stuck to the top of him, He swam around harder and it came off.

Should I be concerned? ANy thoughts?

u might want to post some pics but it just sounds like the sand is sticking to him a little...

With a bit more information we can probably help a little more

I filled in what has already been answered :)

1.The type of test kit you are using

2.
PH
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate

3.Water temp

4.Type and depth of substrate (1/8 inch Gravel)

5.Tankmates (P-bass)

6.What and how often the ray eats

7.How long you have been caring for the ray (new)

8.How long your tank has been set up and your water change schedule (how much and how often) (new tank with old filter media)

9.method of aeration of water

Without any of the other information I would suspect you may have had a spike caused by the increase of bio-load on the tank. But with more info you should be able to find out for sure

Yes true, but the slime is visable coming off him. It comes and goes. He is swimming around ok. Just a new animal for me and I don't want to make any mistakes. Thanks for your help. It did happen right after a 15% water change. Maybe a temp difference?

Tell us what Johno has posted to give you the very best advice please! Its the new MFK Standard form for treatment made by US! haha

I would guess either PH change or ammonia

I do not think temp change would affect the slime coat

but its hard to say without more info

Like Johno said, fill this info out first and we can help better....

1.The type of test kit you are using

2. before and after water change.
PH
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate

3.Water temp

4.Type and depth of substrate (1/8 inch Gravel)

5.Tankmates and size of the tankmates (P-bass)

6.What and how often the ray eats

7.How long you have been caring for the ray (New)

8.How long your tank has been set up and your water change schedule (how much and how often)

9.method of aeration of water

10. Filtration type

11. Picture of tank having problem if you can. (Helps with knowing your set up)

12. tank size (gallons or leters / and footprint) 600gal FOOTPRINT???

1.The type of test kit you are using aquarium Pharm master

2. before and after water change.
PH 8.0 (note tap water is 7. (issue)
Ammonia 0
Nitrite old chems did not test
Nitrate 20ppm after water change yesterday (issue)

3.Water temp 80

4.Type and depth of substrate (1/8 inch silica quartz)

5.Tankmates and size of the tankmates (P-bass and hoplias curupira)

6.What and how often the ray eats (just got him, 1st day ate salmon, silversides. Not super active hunting for food.)

7.How long you have been caring for the ray (New)

8.How long your tank has been set up and your water change schedule (how much and how often) set up for 3 weeks, carried filter media from old tank for bio) Water changes 2/week 15%or 60gal)

9.method of aeration of water 150 gallon wetdry

10. Filtration type 150 wetdry

11. Picture of tank having problem if you can. (Helps with knowing your set up)

12. tank size (gallons or leters / and footprint) 600gal 8' by 30"

So it looks like the nitrate is high (water changes more freq) and substrate is affecting the PH because tap water is 7.4.
