A few days ago I added pair of reticulatas to my 100g tank (it's a DIY tank - floor dimensions are 46"X27"). They are picky eaters but I've got them eating blackworms and ghost shrimp. Today I came across some captive bred motoro pups and couldn't resist buying a small male. I'm definitiely planning on returning one of the retics to the lfs. My question is, can I keep the other retic with the motoro, or am I better off returning both the retics and keeping just the motoro? I hear that young rays tend to be more active and outgoing in the presence of other rays.

I know that male motoros tend to get aggressive, but at what size does this occur? I don't anticipate being able to upgrade to a larger setup anytime soon, so I'm probably going to sell the motoro when he reaches about 10".

I had a retic and motoro mixed once. They were about the same size and my motoro was sickly while the retic fat and an agressive eater. At first I was worried that my retic would be too agressive at feeding time for my motoro (probably going to be opposite in your case, well most cases for that matter, if you say the retics are picky eaters) but the motoro fattened up just fine. I unfortunatly lost the retic who was 100% healthy to an ammonia spike in my tap. It did not even phase my motoro who I would say was only at about 75% full health at the time. This is why IME retics are far more sensitive then motoros.

I have always wondered, when rays pancake each other I have noticed that they kind of nibble as well. Has any one ever heard of one ray biting an eye off of another ray? It seems possible to me.

nice vid. even though its so small its not bothered? whats the dimensions on that tank?

Retic is 5.5 in been with them a month, and no problems. The female is 12in and the male is 9in. Tank is a standard 90gl but they will be upgraded to a 300gl rubbermaid tub in about a month or less. So don't worry.

The male is agressive to the female motoro but leaves the retic alone which is a female as well.

He has only started recently. They have been together since they were 5in. He has been doing a bit of nipping but nothing major, I hope it is just love bites. She actually tends to be more agressive when it comes to feeding time and to wanting to kill tank mates. She took a go at my 16in marbled pim one day.

is that why there is only one other fish left? lol. how long you had them, and how long does it take for them to get to adult (or nearish say 18ish")

I traded all my african cichlids for these two. The lady I got them from bought them as a pair at 5in. They are a year and a half old. Not to sure how long it takes for them to get bigger but rvrrays has had his 18in female motoro for 7 years.
