So this fish was labeled as a rare mottled Jack Dempsey. I thought it was sweet and only $15 so I got it. Since I have never heard of one, I am assuming that this is a mix of some kind. It has the coloration of a RD, but it is longer like a dempsey. Could this be a RD/JD mix, or am I wrong and does a mottled JD actually exist?

Whatever it is, it is 'fading' and not 'mottled'...

Yeah whatever it is, is right. That fish is gonna be a completely different color in half a year or so.. Has the face only a mother could love!

You have yourself a genuine Red devil. We are living in the age of, nobody knows what they're doin. So the responsibility of purchasing fish is pretty much in our hands. I once bought a Red Belly Piranha (S. Natterreri) out of a tank marked Red Belly pacu. From no other than Pet Land Discount. In the heart of N.Y.C.!

Looks like a normal pet store Midevil to me. The pet store was probably used to getting them in already peeled because most places feed hormone enhanced food so they peel young and sale earlier. Yours is going to be solid orange in a couple months.
