I was wondering if I could get one for an aquarium that is around 72 degrees and during the summer the water might go to 80 degrees but only for a short time of the day. Could it be in a 20 gallon that is
30" long 13" tall and 12" wide? or would it have to be in my 55 gallon? the water is kept at 78 degrees In my 55gallon because I have a tire track eel and I cant get the eel out of the aquarium. once I get the eel I will lower the temperature in my 55gallon to 72 degrees, but my 20 gallon is at 72 degrees.

It don't need a 55gal. They are inactive fish. I do have concerns about the temperature that might go over 80 as adult scuplins cannot handle warm temperatures.

What about Prickly Sculpin?
All sculpins are coldwater and not a single species that can handle hot temperatures (young ones can but not adults).

I think the 20 gallon might get to 80 degrees but I just set It up and I did not get a thermometer for it yet. I know my 55 gallon that is at 78 degrees sometimes gets to 80 degrees. I will try to figure out if the 20 gallon would get that warm. I read that some species can survive 80 degrees for a short time. my 55 gets about 80 degrees for about 3-4 hours a day for 1-2 weeks in June or July. I would think that a prickly sculpin could survive since (from what I have read) it lives near here.

Well you can't collect any fishes in CA without a permit. Yes some species can survive 80 degrees for a short time but these are usually young scuplins and not adults.

Do you know of a way I could get a prickly sculpin. It will not be hot here for a while from what I know. Is there a way I could keep The temperature at 72 without using a chiller? I want to keep It at 72 degrees because I also have plants In the aquarium. And would you recommend a mottled or a prickly sculpin for a 20 gallon?

The only one way to get a scuplin(regardless of species) legally is ordering them online. You do not need a chiller to keep scuplins, just keep them cool and not let the water get too hot for them.
