Mount Everest Traffic Jamb

That's basically the whole thing. Flying there, permit, guides, sherpa's and everything. At least it use to be few years back, wouldn't surprise me if it were even more now a days but back around 5 years ago they said on a documentary I watched that is ran from about 45-60k just depending who you went with.
I heard a report today stating people are spending upwards of 100k$ to summit these days. I love the mountains, but that is not going to happen. No interest.

Yes some might be spending that amount -- but the real problem is that there are so many new/inexperienced outfits, that prices have actually been driven down -- if you shop around you can get up Everest for under $30,000 nowadays with some cheapo guide co. -- and they may or or may not inquire/care about your past climbing experience -- they just want your money.

Imho they should make it a requirement that anyone climbing Mt. Everest should have climbed at least one 6,000m+ mountain before. Everest shouldn't be anyone's first mountain. It's like getting a Lamborghini for your first car, or an Arowana as your first fish -- problems will almost assuredly ensue.

Yeah they really should. Seems people want to "do" Everest like its nothing. The Nepalese government likes the tourist $$ too much to start imposing that level of regulation.

Eiger Dreams is another really good book by the same author that wrote Into Thin Air dealing with the subject of mountaineering. John Krakauer is an excellent storyteller.

I climbed Mt. Everest last night. When I looked down I could see my slippers....It cost me nothing at all and the highest mountain I had climbed before was my sofa :grinno:
