Has he been lip locking with any other fish... they can get this if they are lip locking often because of aggression.. even if their aggression does not add up to much... they get a sore on the lip from it... any pics....

Nice pics and im not an expert, But I think it will clear. there pretty quick healing fish, Mine ran face first into a sharp slat and pealed back his face, I cut it off with scissors, put him in a iso tank, added some quick cure (ick out) as a precaution and 1 week later ready to go back with his buddies.. see what devil thinks...

the pics are not the clearest but i am still thinking it is from lip locking with some other fish... do you ever observe this behavior?.. mine has a little sore on his lip from time to time lip locking with the oscar... or the black belt or the red devil....the venustus is the boss in the tank and thats his way of telling them not to tresspass unless you see him first.. but of course there is the possibility of fungus too... just not as likely to me... i would keep a good eye on it .. if you do not see it improve ...put him in small tank with same water from mother tank and medicate.. instead of treating the whole tank.. he is handsome.... by the way...:D here he is with a little bloody spot..by the way yours does not look like a typical venustus.. something different about him...i think you have a nimbochromis fuscotoeniatus which is in the top pic... rare one since i have never seen them before..

is his mouth a little clear?? It could be cotton mouth. Just add in some salt and heat. You can use api meds like erithyromycin or something and it should clear pretty easily.

Most of the time, it isn't true fungal infection as often suggested. It's simply bacterial infection that goes away if treated with erythromycin like Ash suggested or anything else designed to battle bacterial infections.

thanks for the replies guys

it bottom lip looks a wee bit better today, the cotton layer is minimal too, so fingers crossed it clears up soon, i will keep a good eye on it and if there is not improvement i will isolate him and treat him, it could well be from lip locking although i have never seen him do this and he is quite peaceful too.

liz i looked up the nimbochromis fuscotoeniatus and although one of the pictures was very similar, the body pattern on my fish is more like the venustus, i was told by the previous keeper that i had 2 livingstoni, but the male and females have different patterns on their body, so i decided it looks like i have a male venustus and a female livingstoni. i could be wrong ;)

2 of them together
