My 4 inch flowerhorn has a white fungusy substance stuck on his inner upper and bottom lips. I believe that he had a little fight with my clown loaches and damaged his mouth a little, and then this stuff started to grow.

I tried to do some research. I read about mouth rot/fungus, but I read that this is normally caused by unhealthy, crowded tanks. He is in a 55 with 4 clown loaches and a small Ornate - healthy water parameters. Like I said, I think the growth is from sustaining an injury on his mouth. I noticed it a few days ago, and he is still very active with a great appetite.

Any suggestions on what this is and what I should do?

Thanks.

True fungal infections are very rare. Yours is bacterial infection. If I were you, isolate the fish and consider treating with antibacterial meds. Maracyn, Binox or Acriflavine should do the job.

Thanks for the input.

What about Melafix and salt treatment?

They aren't as effective unfortunately.
