My dempseys just finished laying a clutch of eggs and are "fighting". How long do I wait to separate them? I dont want either to get injured or worse. The male is smaller (my EBJD). There is a glass separater, they can stay in the smae tank. She finished laying eggs 20min ago. In a 125 with tankmates. all separated except the 2 dempseys. Any thoughts?

If you are sure the male fertalized the eggs I would let a few of the other fish back in with the pair. The male should focus on chasing away the intruding fish thus taking the heat off the female. If that doesnt work just seperate the male so the female can focus on tending the eggs.

I havent seen him physically fertilize the eggs, but she layed them at least 20-30 min ago. How long does it normally take? wouldnt it be immediate? Thanks for the help. This is the third batch of eggs. last time he got pretty beat up.
The last picture is from after the last batch

My male is usually on them right after she is done laying them. He watches really patiently so its kind of funny. But in the pictures it kind of looks like she doesnt want him over there. I would give it a little time but if they are really hurting each other I would seperate them. If this one doesnt work out I would leave something in with them next time they spawn.

That is alot of eggs! you need a bigger rock lol.

So far so good. I moved the male EBJD to a quarantine tank with a little medicine cause he got the worst of it. Not too bad, though. She and her eggs are now separated from the other stock in the tank. She barely ever leaves the eggs. just waiting now. Her entire previous batch was infertile, all turning white. I must have separated them too early. But now only a handful (not literally) are white. I would say 15-20 eggs. only time will tell.
