Move in my future maybe, turtle question

RTC? red tail cat fish?

Ok yes I would love one of those but not sure if it would be doable.

I am not sure what I mean by swimmers. Eric mentioned I would need native swimmer not plodders so i was trying to figure out what those were? So would any of the softshells work with a pond of that size and dept? not that I am ruling out any other turts I just really like them.

I do know nothing will be done this season, with fall coming up quick. I dont want to get stuff and then winter roll around quickly... If that makes sense.

Like I mentioned you could definitely keep Eastern Spiny and Smooth Softshells in there. Just make sure they are one of the Northern subspecies and not a southern variety as those ones might not be able to handle the winter up here.

I think he is referring to species like the snappers that do not swim but walk along the bottom. but if it is native to your area you would be fine with anything (snappers and softshells included) and if it is a big enough pond then you can mix most anything without problems.

Ive seen comon snappers swim, trully swim and glidding true the water like any other turtle. I know people in europe keeping them in outdoor ponds year round with 1 meter of water deep and great sucess, so comon snappers are still on for you :)

The species that walk along the bottom more than others are the Mud and Musk Turtles. They'd rather climb to the surface as opposed to swim.

right but because it is going to be filled with plants and stuff I bet even those would do fine.

Swimmers are any Turtles that have webbed feet.......Any on the bottom plodders ( Turtles that don't have webbed feet ) may work, but they don't do well in deep water especially if they don't have alot of cover and toe holds. I'd hate to see you get something like Spotteds, just to have some nice Turtle shell paper weights in the future.........

If i were you i would get softshell's map's & paint's they could stay out side all winter if they have a place to hibrinate.

I definately dont want to end up with paper weight shells.

The pond will be planted plenty and I am sure will have some driftwood but I dont want to over do "stuff" in the pond. I would much rather keep it as natural as possible with the exception of what ever turtles I add.

I really would like to go with some of the northern softshells. But then again I do love them snappers.

I am sure I will go back and forth for a few months till I get the exact dimensions of the pond and depth and them make my final decisions ( with help / adivce from you guys of course).

Another question while I am at it... How far down in the ground does the fencing need to be to prevent escape?
