Hey guys, I am looking for some advice/input. My wife and I will likely be moving from Knoxville, TN to northern Michigan (Manistee/Traverse City area). I have three 125g tanks and one 75g tank. If we move, I will be starting physician assistant (PA) school, which is a 2.5 year process once I start - which would be August 2015. Basically, I will not have the time or the money to have these tanks set up while I am in PA school. So, they would sit empty for the next 3+ years.

Here is my question, should I hang on to the tanks and equipment (LED lights, canister filters, sumps, etc.) or go ahead and sell them? I don't need the cash that I would get from selling, but obviously it would be a major pain to move and possibly store these. On the other hand, I would end up losing money overall, assuming I repurchased the equipment I currently have in the future, but does that make it worth holding on to everything?

Personally - I'd just sell them - the last thing you need on your plate is to be thinking about moving / storing / etc, these tanks.

I would hold onto everything. Especially after school is done you'll probably have a big loan to pay off.

Split the difference? Keep 2 125's and sell the rest? 2 tanks is not much time outta your day. Only thing I do to mine is change tbe water once a week, and that don't take too long.

It really has nothing to do with time, since I am moving the tanks will have to be broken down. And with how PA school works, I could be gone for two months at a time doing clinical rotations. My wife likes the tanks, but they are mine. I do not want to put the work of caring for them on her for extended periods of time.

So, it seems so far:
1 vote for selling
1 vote for keeping
1 vote for selling part

Any others?

I'd keep the small stuff (LEDs, filters, pumps) and sell the tanks and stands. You wouldn't lose money by selling the tanks and buying used ones in a few years, there is never a shortage of 125s on Craigslist.

I'm not understanding your comment about it not taking time? It will take plenty of time to plan moving these tanks, time moving them, time storing them ? Keeping just the equipment sounds like a healthy, smart move.

Sell the 75g and 2 of the 125g tanks. Filters and lights are easy to move. Store the small stuff in the 125g you keep. If you are moved and in 2 weeks and wish you had some fish you can set up the 125g with the equipment from the other tanks. you should have plenty of filtration for a couple fish in a tank that size so you will have plenty of time between water changes :-)

By time, I meant time spent with regular upkeep (water changes, feeding, etc.). That type of time isn't really part of the consideration. But I think it might be a good idea to keep the small stuff.

I would hang on to at least one tank. Once the bug bites you again you will be ready to go.
