moving 240 G fish tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
have someone take pics of this move...that alone would be priceless reference.

appliance dooly from a rental place, with moving blankets. 4 people minimum. i just moved my 230 and 30" wide tanks are no fun moving!

I moved my 6ft tank upstairs which had a 90 degree turn yesterday, I had one strong guy at the top to guide it and me and one other at the bottom to provide the lift. The stairs were carpeted so we could take it one step at a time and with the angle correct we could rest it on the step. When we got to the turn we had to get it vertical and twist it and this is where the strong guy at the top comes in to get it going vertical as we pushed up then it was the same slow process for the rest of the stairs. What are the stairs like that you are moving up?

Now here's the catch, my tank was only a 120 so good luck!

I agree that you should sell it. I have moved a 250+ glass the other day and it was not fun. You guys are going up STAIRS with this? "FOR GET ABOUT IT".....

Sell this before someone gets hurt. Get an acrylic tank or find a new place to live.

I would not even risk having 6 strong men to move this monster cause in the end like someone mentioned, there will only times when 1 person will have to bear the whole tank on one end and this is not fun.

If you do decide to keep this, hire a moving company with insurance like ^ suggested. Stand out of their way and take photos along the way.

Good Luck.

It might be wise to build a quick frame or something the same dimensions of the tank and practice the move in advance.

That is an interesting idea. It might also work as a frame to put the tank inside and hold it in place. You could add cushions all around, then drag it upstairs. With enough support, I would think you could man handle it with no problem. Or you might put it on a heavy blanket and pull/lift step by step, this way your hands are not touching glass.

As to the floor, I think it will hold. Some seem to think floors are made out of toothpicks. Floors can hold a lot of weight, if it can hold people then it can hold a fish tank.

Simple soulution.....get 2- 2x4's and put them on the steps...have 1 guy in front guiding the tank and 2 pushing it up the stairs....I've done it before..

I would not even think about doing this w/4 strong guys unless they were extremely strong. My 240 was very difficult to move in tight spaces and no stairs w/6 average guys. Wrists/hands become the issue before the muscles will, you are probably looking at 400-500 lbs empty.

This is a great solution. Never considered pushing a tank up stairs.
