I am currently living at college where I am 4 hours away from home. I wanted to know if it was ideal to drain enough water from my 20 gallon tank and just drive it home with the blue crayfish in it or if there is a better way to transport it. Thanks.

Id suggest you buy a power adapter to plug into your car's cigarette lighter so that you can just plug in a bubbler while taking the trip. The crayfish needs oxygenated water and perhaps if you have 10% of the water left in a 20 gallon tank you may be alright, but I wouldnt risk it. a $20 investment from walmart for the many moving trips that you will have in college, plus that adaptor is very useful for other electronic devices.

also, not sure how good of an idea it is to move a tank with water? now i know its probably been done many times before, and that it is a manageable size...

But wouldn't it be better to keep the filter media in tank water in a bag, and then transfer the cray in some sort of tub with a bit of tank water and have the tank empty? i know its more work, but just a thought that popped into my head...

Crayfish/yabbies are quite tough. Get a clean takeaway box (bigger than the crayfish/yabby), put some holes in the lid, put the yabby inside, fill with water until it head is able to stick out. Put it in the empty tank and drive off. It'll last

you can drain the water down and have some thing for the cray to climb up(like a rock or tank decoration) and lift it head out of the water to take air so it won't drown because of low Oxygen!

My crays lived for hours out and about exploring my house, if you can keep him wet he will be fine. Heck you could pack him in wet newspaper and he will be fine. If you had any friends with fins they might not fair so well...generally speaking when I moved to and fro with my fish they were OK from the sloshing around in the tank (lowered the water level)
