cool i love manatees i got to swim with them in mexico theyre awesome

We were swimming with these in Florida and it was a blast. On the boat ride in we actually saw an injured manatee being taken out of the river. Very cool work.

tsk tsk.. YOU of all people should know better than not releasing our pet back to the wild Matt! I'm disappointed in you!!

Jay Kay!!! wow isn't this the Manatee that you guys rescued a few years back and he/she were really sick?

I am a member of the Save the Manatee club, have been for years! Was able a few years ago to actually snorkel with them. I don`t believe that is allowed anymore. It was a wonderful experience though. I have a soft spot in my heart for these mammals. Thank-you for all your group does in an effort to save these incredible creatures!!!!

 Yeah, this guy has been on site for a few years.

USFW and FWC have rescued something like 23 manatees already this year just in this state alone. We currently have a dozen at our place. It's sad to see the state of a lot of them as they come in, hanging on the edge of death. The best option is always help them in their own setting, but sometimes they HAVE to come in for better care prior to being released. We're able to give them any medical attention they need, clean wounds, get them eating on their own, and make sure they are swimming normally. Once they get a clean bill of health, FWC tells us what area they will be released in, and (as you can see) is right there to help us set them free.

As for freeze branding, yeah, it's exactly what it sounds like. The mark is a lot easier on the skin of them, heals cleanly, and it works great for aiding in tracking since the general public can see the numbers and call them into the manatee spotting hotline. For the first few weeks after release, these guys are watched very closely.

It's great to see you are doing some good conservation work at your new job Matt. I would imagine you didn't get that opportunity much in MN.

its gotta feel pretty cool to be involved in such interesting and helpfull endeavors.

side note- is that a 800lb manatee in your ryder, or are you just happy to see me?

wow, branding them looks a bit harsh

I agree. Let's never eat a hamburger again. You and me together we'll stop this atrocity.
