Moved
Ok, I need to move a 240gal tank (8x2x2) in the next week or two. It’s a used glass tank that I got for $175, filled about 4 inches from the top and it held the water, sat in the garage of a guy getting out of aquariums for about 3-4 years. I am using my 89 Toyota 4WD Pick up truck to move the sucker, it’s a long bed with a 7ft bed, and if I open the tail gate its over 8ft. I’m only moving the tank about 4-5 miles and not taking any freeways so I was just going to strap the puppy down. I moved my 180gal in the truck about 15 miles, went on a freeway without any problems. So if I put the tailgate down there is enough room, but my concern is because it’s such an old truck the tailgate isn’t perfectly level with the bed so this could add more stress to the tank, should I be concerned about his? The tailgate maybe about ½ and inch lower than the bed. I was thinking of putting a piece of ply wood on the tailgate to slightly lift up the area the tank would sit on and hopefully level it out better. I’m hoping to avoid using a entire piece of plywood under the tank when I transport it form the guys place to my home. Any thoughts on this? Am I being overly concerned?

nope not being over concerned just cautious wouldnt hurt to put some ply down

I think you will be fine. Instead of wood I have always used towels against the tank and strap/car/tailgates to give the tank some wiggle room during the car trip! This is what I did with my old 360g.

Congrats on the pickup, all glass hu? thats gonna be one heavy beast! what will you stock?

Are talking about an entire piece of wood under the tank or just enough to raise the back end to level it out. The smaller piece will be more than 2ft wide so it be larger than the part of the tank going over the tailgate.

I have to leave the tailgate open, so wanted something more solid to place under tank. I could use a towel or blanket as another layer. I going to use foam pads when I strap it down.

Growing out some P-bass, have a couple Jars, 2 Leich Aros (not going to keep all 4 aro's in the tank, possibly just one), a large midas needs to be moved from my other larger tank, FH, and hopefully a calm Fahaka (have two I am growing out and hoping one will be peaceful). Using this tank to practice building a very large stand (have made a 75gal and 180gal) and possibly in 2-3 years going to replace my 300gal with hopefully a 600 or 750gal, but would like practive making a very large stand.

never hurts to be cautious. i moved a 220 glass from dallas,tx to altus, ok about a 2 and a half hour drive on the interstate. i would put some blankets over the tank as well to protect it from debris that might be kicked up from other vehicles.

I would put a layer of 2" white styrofoam (the soft stuff, not the more rigid pink or blue) under it for cushioning. The tank will dig right in to it and will support it nicely, probably keep it from sliding around too.

Rent a trailer it's easier.. thats what I did $28 per day and it's 12' long and only 8"es off the ground.. Easy loading

For how far he is moving it I would not consider its worth it, and what are trucks for after all.
I like the towel idea because it can help protect it from vibration which can potentially crack it. It worked fine for me when I moved my 125.

I once used left over carpets and blankets to put underneath and support my 370, Oh and strap it down tight too, and it worked perfectly!

Just curious... How many guys do you have helping you with the tank? 240 glass is Crazy heavy!!
