Moving Aquariums... sigh...

Lol, moving a 30g tank is hardly a challenge. Be glad you don't have anything over 100g.

Not to contradict anyone that's already responded but you certainly don't need to keep the substrate, decorations, or any of the tank water. BB does reside in your substrate but certainly not enough to ever start an instant cycle in a tank. If you ever wanted to change your substrate out now is a great opportunity. All you need to worry about maintaining is the bio media in whatever filtration you are running. It will cause an "insta cycle" in your new tank and you won't need to wait before adding the fish right into the tank. Just make sure the media stayed submerged in conditioned water. Just throw it in the tote with the fish.

As far as moving the fish that'll be super easy. Go buy a 30g tote from dollar general or home depot. Fill it with same temp water (obviously you need to condition the new water with prime or something similar so it doesn't nuke your bb on your media or harm your fish) and float some fake plants on the top for cover for the fish. You can add a bubbler with an air stone in there or some bag buddies for oxygen and lid it and move it. If it's 15 minutes you should have 0 issues. Realistically you don't even need the aeration or bag buddies for a 15 minute drive, though it can't hurt.

This is very simple!

1. Put fish in 5 gal bucket, or large plastic tote with battery operated bubblers.
Or, alternative method is to bag your fish in breather bags, and use bag buddies.

2. Fill a bucket or container with some tank water, and soak your filter media (everything inside your filter)
in this container. Then once you get to your new house, you won't have to re-cycle your tank.

3. Empty your tank. Do not leave substrate inside your aquarium when moving, it could blow out the bottom.

4. Move :)

What kind of filter do you have on your 30g tank? What kind of filter are you going to run on the 125g tank? How long until you plan on doing this move?

This seems straightforward but just to reiterate... you're saying as long as I use the same filter media, I still won't need to cycle the tank even with new substrate?

I use an HOB filter, and since I anticipated this situation in the future I got one that's meant for a 75gal, and planned on getting an additional one of the same when I moved to the 125. I'm hoping to be able to move about this time next month.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying.

It might potentially cause a "mini cycle" in your tank since the new tank is bigger and you'll have the smaller filter on the tank and the new non BB developed filter on there but your fish will be safe and you should be able to remove the smaller filter within 1 to 1.5 month as long as you had filtration strong enough to filtrate the entire tank running along side the filter with the pre established bb running with it.
