Moving fish room to garage???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't know if this will work, I'm sure someone knows if this will work. Leave the drywall up, spray it with the thick, spreading foam that builders use for insulation in between walls. Then cover it with drywall or whatever you choose. Great thing about the foam, if you need to get into an area behind the foam, you just reach in and tear it out, when you are done with the repairs, spray foam into the area.

It is a two car garage, theres a pond out there already. i will have roughly 12-15 tanks set up out there. I have a electric space heater out there now i use when im working out there it keeps it comfortable, but i dont know about running it all the time.

What about sheet insulation put up over the drywall?

Unless you turn one of the garage into a separate room just for fish, it will be too cold.
I too have a two car garage under the house and in the winter time, it gets around 40s. Too cold and too much electric usage. I was running 8-40gallon breeder tank, 1-180 and a few 20s and a few 55s and it just is not feasible. So in the winter time, like now, I only have 1 breeder and a koi tank.

I did not want to tear down one of the garage door and block it off completely or built a wall between the garage to keep the rooms warm in case I move. If you want to proceed, make sure you paint the garage with mold and mildew resistant paint.

You can do it regardless of the weather, but it is going to cost you in heating bills. Does your furnace have a register in the garage? If not, you will need to add some space heaters or something. Those can get expensive and be fire hazards.

Yeah but Charlotte has a short winter and cheap electricity! Could not be done in CT without completely finishing the room....Unless money is no object then all bets are off.

What about drilling holes in the dry wall, and spraying that spray foam insulation inbetween the studs? I thought of it last night, but thought "how much is a can of that stuff? Probably not worth it for the whole garage."
