Moving from 180 to 400gal Need advise

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thx all. The only reason I was going to us the water from the existing was for the reasons bderek had. So all new is ok then eh?

What are your suggestion on the lenght I would keep my two canister running until I remove then? I will have me 40gal sump running at the same time. The media fir the sump is new. Could I not also take out all my media from my canister and bagged them then throw into sump and not run the canister? Both my eheim pro 3 2080 and fx5 are full of eheim media.

Just a thought and have expensive black rays and super Ray arowana to look out for.

The only reason for me to do it like bderek suggested would be if there was a large PH difference. That being similar, just go with new water.
It doesn't matter whether you use the media in the cannisters or the sump. Just make sure the whole process time is kept as short as possible so you don't have any BB die off. However, if you plan on continued use of the cannisters on the 400, I would just leave the media in them and let the sump colonize itself.

I don't plan on using the canisters after everything gets going. Just not sure how long it would take for bb to establish in sump before I can remove all together.

If this is the case. Just throw the media straight into your sump. Also throw in any sponge/filter floss material from the filters and you will be good to go.;)

I would use some of the water from the 180 in your new tank, and green terra had a good idea about throwing in ur media in the sump if you dont really plan on using the canister filters. but i would use them till the first water change than you should be all good with the bacteria in the tank. but really your call.

Unless there is a very large difference in PH,you should have no problem with not using water from your 180. Test your tap PH after it has set out for 24hrs,and compare it to the water in your 180.Unless you are running CO2 in your 180,or buffering it in some way,it should be very close to the same.
