then just drop in your heater and monitor temp. if you dump warm water in you will be spiking the temp every time you do and adding stress to the the already stressed fish.

make sure you leave the lid on the tempature is not going to matter to much because your running your heater plug it in and keep an eye on it. GL
I use coolers and gatorade style water coolers you dont have to wrry about them spilling and they are insulated
i third the coolers . traveled with 25 fish i bought in chicago all the way to sw corner of kansas (16 hr drive ) and water didn't drop but 3 degrees from the tank tempered water they were in from start to finish . i did however use a battery powered bubbler to supply some oxygen .
I Concur with the coolers. I have done this method dozens of times, 3-4 hours later water felt like it was the same temp as when i put it in.
