Hi all, moving from NY to IL soon. Have moved fish before but never very large fish. Have a large aro and several large cichlids, a TSN, and others. Was wondering what the more experienced fish movers out there could offer in terms of advice, and if anyone has had experience with fish/pet moving companies. Thanks!

The cichlids are easier - 5 gallon buckets, with battery operated air pumps - KEEP THEM WARM, KEEP THEM WARM, KEEP THEM WARM - use bottles of hot water, blankets, keep the car itself warm, etc. DO NOT PUT THEM IN A TRAILER - they will die on the way (I learned this the hard way one time, on a SHORT move.)

The arowana and TSN - extra large styrofoam box, with XL trash bags - 5 or 6 inside each other, filled with a generous amount of water to minimize sloshing, and again, an air pump.

I have done this a few times with no deaths, other than the one and only mistake I made a long time ago, thinking a half hour would not make a difference.

Extra large Rubbermaid totes for the bigger fish and smaller buckets for the cichlids. I would go with the totes personally since they have lids and you could tape heat packs to the lids.

Not in winter, dude. The styro is for insulation. Taping heat packs to rubbermaid lids won't do anything. Not being argumentative, I just don't want him to lose any fish.

Heat packs will help keep the temp inside the tote at a high enough temp for the fish to survive. It would work the same as when shipping. If he does the styro boxes with heat packs it would be even better. I said the totes since he's moving a few large fish and he didn't say how big. The tote will also take away splashing ,and jumpers (Arowana) and would be easier to carry being styro can break from the weight. (I learned this the hard way lucky the ray survived the fall)

Trust me fwprawn I would hate to give bad advice and the fish die.

I appreciate everyone's advice. Am planning to move most of my collection in styro fish boxes. Have done it before and am pretty comfortable with that. My biggest concern are the larger fish such as the 2ft aro, as mentioned. I will be moving the biggest fish in June. Anyone have experience with O2 tablets? Have used them once before but it seems harder to find them now. Lots of great advice, thanks!
