i am moving my 55g tank to a new stand. i was wondering if anyone knew how much water i will need to remove in order to safely/most easily move the tank with just two people? i am planning on just leaving a couple of inches of water, just enough so i dont have to remove all the fish. will this still be too heavy with a couple of inches of gravel in there as well? let me know what you guys think.

In a standard 55, a couple of inches of water will mean 7 1/2 gallons or about 70 pounds to go along with the weight of the tank plus substrate. Definitely possible with a couple of people since you're looking at around 130 lbs. Provided, of course, we're all referring to a glass tank. If it's acrylic...empty it.

ya its glass...thanks for the help. i feel better attempting it with at least one other person confirming my assumptions.

I would keep at least half the water. You can buy rubbermaid trash cans(30 gallon) at Wal-Mart to do this. Just use a powerhead to pump it out and back in. I would try to remove all the water because I have seen the bottom fall out on a aquarium first hand.

hmm...well i have an empty 20g that i guess i could use......maybe better safe than sorry?

I would suggest removing everything. Clearing up broken glass, sand and dead fish all over your house floor is not fun.

Glad you said that Cougar. I have seen it too. 2 different times. Thank God it wasn't mine. The tanks are desighned to take stress sitting still and level. Otherwise, you have to learn tank repair and carpet cleaning at the same time.

Ive moved several tanks with the substrate and a couple inches of water and never had a problem. If you feel safe go for it. its your call though because there is a risk. Ive moved a 55, 46 hex, and a 29 several times like that

Yeay but, that is you and you seem unusually lucky. Besides you live in indiana. There is less gravity there!!!!!

moving tanks is probably the only bad part of fish keeping. that and hearing my wife complain about buying bigger tanks and fish. I moved 3 55 gallons 2 20 longs and it wasa not fun. save at least half the water. it will help out alot. i also agree to remove everything from the tank, more work but worth it not having to get your hand stiched up and buy another tank.
