Something to think about, is the water at your new place the same as your old place? When i moved from Texas to Louisiana i went from hard water with a PH over 9 to very soft with a PH of 5-6. i had to look up how to make "african cichlid water" and make batches in a trash can. Since im a firm believer in keeping what lives in your water, i slowly phased out my hard water fish for soft water fish. I used the big food grade brute "trash cans" for my move. Get your filters back up and running asap, i made the mistake of leaving a canister filter turned off for about a week. The smell was horrible when i got around to setting it up, i replaced all the media in it to be on the safe side.

i haven't thought of that. my fish are all soft to neutral water. with the new set up i was going to use indian almond leaves as well as not soak any new driftwood i buy. i also use peat in my canister filter. but i will look into that, id hate to give up my severum. :(

Can't you just get like an RO unit or something to take everything out of the water except hydrogen and oxygen and start over from there, buffering and whatnot to create the water that your fish need to survive? Or is that not realistic?

Yes, you could get an ro unit and make soft water. Mix the tap water with ro water to get the parameters that you want.

It's a 75gal aquarium and I'm not moving far. My substrate I planned on changing figured it would be easier. It's mostly sand and some fluorite. Don't want the fluorite any more. Not doing plants. Any ideas on how to scoop up sand?

best way to scoop sand is A) A shop vac and vacuum it up
or
Use a dust pan (works best imo)

I had to move 22 hours away from home. Decided my fish were coming with me as I didn't trust anyone else to take care of them. I kept the fish in a 40 gallon cooler in separate containers and had an air stone in each container (it was summer). I sat some bio balls in my tank for a week prior to the move and didn't feed my fish the day before I was to leave. I bucketed up the gravel and bio balls along with just enough water. I put the filter in a plastic bag. After arriving, I put the gravel and bio balls down and filled it the tank up. Let it run for a bit with the old filter, and put the fish in, everyone survived.
