I agree if you keep the filters wet, and the fish warm you don't need to bring all the water. Think of it as a large WC just keep like 10-15 gallons of the original water and use prime or amquel on the new water coming in.

Agreed. Coolers of any kind are great insulators , and cheap.

If you are friendly with your LFS they will sometimes let you have some Styrofoam insulated boxes that they receive fish shipments in. I also keep one hand for bringing bagged fish home from the LFS and when buying fish to big to be bagged.

Get back together with the chick and don't move the tank at all! :D

Better plan. Forget the tank and chick and put the extra money you will have, now that you are single, into a "MONSTER" tank.

Don't do it like me:P I just had to move my 55 & 65 last week. I drained 80% of the water, left all the sand in both tanks, left all the fish in both tanks. Me & a buddy lifted the tank off the stand, my wife grabbed the stand and put it on a furniture dolly, then we put the tank back on the stand. This let us roll the tank out to the uhaul easily. Then we picked the tank back up & slid it into the back of the uhaul. (Obviously, repeat for the second tank). Drove that to my parents house, did the process in reverse & filled with their water.

I only lost one pictus cat in the ordeal, rip.

Do it like the other guys are saying...put your fish in buckets, drain all the water (or leave just enough to keep the substrate wet) and bring a buddy to help you move it. If you have time, you can test the water at the new location for PH & hardness to see if it really is a big difference.

i figure there will be a big difference between the water, cause she has well water i believe as to where i have "city water" also planned on removing almost all water from tank since i didn't want it to crack while moving it the drive is about 15 mintues would that require anything for the fish?

As long as they don't get to cold in transit all I would do is put an air bubler in after you get to the new house so they have good O2 while you set up the new tank.

The last time I had a short move with my fish they where in 5g. buckets in the back of my truck during a snow storm for about 10 to 15 min. and did fine. The larger the volume of water you move them in the longer heat loss will take.

OK man go get a styrofoam cooler. Get some 1 gallon freezer bags at the grocery store. Take and put the fish in a 5 gallon bucket or large enough container. Put some good quality clean water in the bags that are the same temp as the aquarium water. Get your fish in the bucket and drain the tank. The fish will be ok as long as you keep the water in the bucket above 72 degrees. Just use a heater. Get your tank set up and running then go back and bag your fish. pack them in the cooler and get them to your tank. They will be fine.
